Many of the centuries-old pueblos welcome visitors for special celebrations, and several sites around the state tell important stories of struggles for Native Americans’ rights and homeland. The villages and mission churches in the northern part of the state illuminate a Hispanic legacy that continues to thrive, and down south you can retrace the steps of Billy the Kid country or inspect the world’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport. New Mexico’s past, present and future are at the forefront of an ever-evolving American West.
