Duty: U.S. residents may bring back, duty free, once every 30 days, articles for personal or household use up to $800 in value; up to one liter of alcoholic beverages per person over the age of 21; and one carton of cigarettes per person over the age of 18. Cuban cigars are prohibited. The next $1,000 worth of items brought back is subject to a flat rate duty of 3 percent. Do not bring back live animals, plants, lemons, apples, mangoes, some herb teas, pork, ham, uncooked chicken, eggs, or products made from endangered animals. Information: U.S. Customs and Border Protection, www.cpb.gov or (202) 354-1000.

Renting a Car: The standard insurance included with many car rental contracts in Mexico provides only nominal liability coverage, often as little as the equivalent of $200. Because Mexican law permits the jailing of drivers after an accident until they have met their obligations to third parties and to the rental company, renters should read contracts carefully and purchase additional liability and comprehensive insurance if necessary.

New Passport Requirements: All persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Mexico are required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card. Currently, U.S. Citizens traveling to Mexico via a land port of entry, including into Ciudad Juárez, must have a U.S. Passport or a valid driver’s license with additional proof of U.S. citizenship, such as a birth certificate. Beginning in June 2009, U.S. citizens must have a U.S. Passport or other approved U.S. Government document when reentering the United States.
